Our Standards

Animal welfare is the primary focus and concern for our family farmers. We're proud that all our farms are certified by Humane Farm Animal Care. Our farmers follow strict standards, far exceeding industry norms. At Farmers Hen House, we regularly inspect our farms to ensure our high standards are followed.

Farmers Hen House Farming Standards

For all our farms:

Our indoor standards include:

  • Six inches perch space/hen at the minimum
  • 20 percent of floor space dedicated as dust bathing area
  • Nine square feet nest space for every 100 hens
  • 1.5 inches of feeder space/hen
  • One water station for every 12 hens

Our feed cannot contain:

  • Animal byproducts
  • Hormones or antibiotics

Our farm management must include:

  • Thorough record keeping and daily hen inspections
  • Continuous compliance with state and national food safety laws

For our organic farms:

Our indoor standards include:

  • 1.4-1.5 square feet of floor space/hen
  • Certified organic feed

Our outdoor standards include:

  • A minimum of 2.0 square feet/hen range area (most farms have much larger range areas)
  • Outside vegetation and dust bathing areas
  • Bushes/trees or structures for shade and shelter from predators
  • Access to the outdoors for at least six hours/day, weather permitting

For our cage free farms:

Our indoor standards include:

  • 1.2 square feet of floor space/hen
  • 20 percent of floor space dedicated as dust bathing area
  • 100 percent vegetarian diet
